BIOGRAPHY: Don Friesing
"The Man”
His spirit and passion for the growth and development of his percussion sections was immense. Mr. Friesing’s ability to motivate and communicate to different levels of students was truly remarkable.
During his teaching career he produced numerous percussion Championship titles with his unique “Syncopation” style of writing.
Mr. Friesing always made “Quality of Performance” a priority. His precision and care for detail was evident in his drumlines.
I was fortunate to be taught by Mr. Friesing in a junior Drum Corps from Long Island, NY, called the Islanders. It was here where I experienced an education that will stay with me forever. I learned from Mr. Friesing what dedication, commitment, attitude, and respect were all about.
Mr. Friesing pushed us to achieve more than we thought we could do, exceeding our own expectations. He treated us with respect and provided us with the best life-enriching experience. He made learning fun by being unselfish about his knowledge.
It was very exciting being part of this talented drum line, which consisted of talents popular in today’s Drum Corps Activity, such as Jim Drost, Mark Holub, Chet DoBoe, David King, and several others. We were young homegrown players true to our Drum Corps, which was growing, building, and eventually winning Championships.
I cannot say enough about Mr. Friesing. I can write several books about, “The Man”.
I am honored and privileged to have been taught by Mr. Friesing. I owe a great deal to him for my success as a percussion instructor and arranger. I thank him for his faith and trust in me, and for all he is about, he receives one of the greatest awards..RESPECT!
I cannot think of anyone more deserving to be inducted into the Drum Corps Hall of Fame. It’s long over due and well deserved.
Congratulations to “The Man”.
Respectfully yours,
Johnny
